Do you have what it takes to become a contractor?

Do you have what it takes to be a contractor?

If you’ve spent any time reading our other blog posts and you’ve arrived here – the chances are that you’re either thinking about becoming a contractor, leaving the 9-5 behind, or you’re already a contractor checking how you measure up!

Read on to see if you have what it takes to be a contractor.

+ People Skills

You’re going to need to be able to dig to the heart of the customer’s problems to find out how you can help (what the client REALLY needs might be different to what they think they need), convince them that your solution ticks all of the boxes and show your passion – sometimes all over email. There’s also a key moment when you decide whether to put your first smiley face in an email.

Strong communication will help you avoid a heap of misunderstandings, miscommunications and lots of mishaps.

+ Problem Solving

Now you understand what your client needs, you’ll have to come up with a solution that really smashes their problems out of the water and takes their business to the next level. This sounds really cliched and ‘buzzwordy’, but it’s really just a chance to show you know what you’re talking about and what you’re made of!

+ Project(s) Management

It’s unlikely you’ll have just one client and one project on the go at any one time, even if you do – you need to manage the project carefully.

Time management, planning and the other skills we’ve written about above all play a part in effective project management.

Knowing how long a project and its component parts are likely to take can be the difference between a happy client or a disgruntled detractor.
